Murals are large images painted or applied directly to a wall in a permanent or semi-permanent way. Some murals are painted on the wall or other permanent surface (i.e. fence, floor, ceiling, etc) and others are painted on a different surface that is then permanently or semi-permanently affixed to the permanent surface.
