Welcome to my studio blog!

January 16th 2023

Hey there! Thanks for stopping by to see what I’m up to! My first little article about the happenings in and around my studio 🥰 My plan with this is to share some of my process, fun projects, things I’m working on, and maybe a little bit about Bear Bottom, that’s the name of my home and studio 😊

A little about me… I’m Lacey Finchum, artist and owner of Lace Finch Art. I’m a trompe l’eoil and 3D muralist from North Arkansas. I paint realistic, surrealistic, and illusion murals from my home studio in the heart of the Ozark Mountains. I’m currently getting into designing wall papers, wall coverings, and printed wall murals. I also teach art to kids, share some how-tos/tips & tricks, and get into other creative areas sometimes too.

Part of me always wanted to be an artist but for the longest time, I avoided it and made excuses as to why I couldn’t or wasn’t good enough but then I tried and realized I had too cuz it felt right. I spent a few years practicing every day and learning everything I could from every teaching artist I could find. Later I even did an internship under International Trompe l’oeil artist John Pugh. I wanted to know all the things!!

In 2016 I was hired for my first job and started my business. I was hooked! I started out painting on saw blades and canvas and in 2018 I painted my first mural, “Alice’s Library” at a friends house.

Wall to wall, ceiling to floor, imaginary landscapes transform this boring room into a place where dreams take root. Image contains a surreal sunset, hot air balloons, a rambling river in the fall, and northern lights and stars over Lake Superior.

Wide angle view of "Alice's Library". From mountain overlooks to tropical beaches and Northern lights, it's all in there. The ceiling is even sunsets and galaxies.

I went to town and painted ever corner of that room with various scenes from a sunset beach, a lookout over a river valley, and Northern Lights over Lake Superior. I knew right then I wanted to create dreamscapes for people. Whatever wild and imaginary places you can dream up, I want to paint them! I love seeing peoples faces light up when they walk in to the room they imagined and I love being able to make dreams come true with paint.

Protruding corner wrapped in a 3D mural . Contains crumbling plaster over old brick and stone walls with arched door and window openings. Grape vines and butterflies, a view of Tuscany, black cat, tropical flowers, and a purple dragon.

Trompe L’oeil Tuscan Fantasy View wraps around a corner and appears to have open doors, an open shutter, and a grape stealing dragon. Don’t forget the cat on the barrel!

Over the years I’ve developed my own style and methods for paint and mural application and now I’m working on putting together a line of peel and stick wall murals. My favorite way to create murals is on a non-woven fabric called poly-tab. It forms a great, lightweight and durable material for the base surface of my murals. It hangs just like wall paper, cleans easily, and allows me to paint your mural in my studio rather than your greatroom. I’ll paint on walls too, when the situation calls for it.

In coming articles I’ll tell you more about my process and how you can have your own custom dreamscape. If you want to see more, sign up for my newsletter below to be notified of new articles.

Here’s to some really cool stuff happening in 2023!🍻🥂🥃
